Under-Fence Plinths Explained | What They Do, What They Cost & How to Fit Them
There is a gap under your fence. Mulch washes into the next door after every storm, the dog has found the low spot, and the bottom of the fence sheet is sitting in wet dirt going rusty. An under fence plinth fixes all three.
A plinth is a slim board that sits at ground level directly beneath the bottom of a fence, filling the gap and holding back a shallow step of soil. You will see them in composite, timber and as a concrete fence plinth, and they suit new fences and existing ones. This guide covers what a plinth does, the sizes and materials available, what you should expect to pay, how to install one, and the point where a plinth is no longer the right answer.
What is an under fence plinth?

An under fence plinth, sometimes called an under-fence plinth or UFP, is a length of board that runs along the base of a fence line, sitting between the fence posts and under the fence panel or palings.
It does two jobs at once. It closes the gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence, and it holds back a small difference in soil height so a garden bed or lawn can sit higher on one side.
That is where the confusion usually starts, so here is the line: a plinth is a levelling and gap-filling product, not a structural retaining wall. Most manufacturers limit plinths to a shallow soil step, commonly a maximum of two courses or around 400mm total. Once you are retaining more than that, you are building a retaining wall and the rules change.
What an under fence plinth actually does
Very few blocks in South East Queensland are flat from boundary to boundary. A gentle fall across a yard is enough to open a visible gap under a fence once the panels run in a straight line, and that gap causes more trouble than most people expect.
A plinth solves the practical problems:
- Keeps soil, mulch and gravel in your yard instead of washing under the fence during heavy rain
- Stops dogs digging out and discourages rats, snakes and other visitors from getting in
- Lifts the fence clear of the ground, which is where timber palings rot first and where steel fence sheets sit in moisture
- Gives you a hard edge to run a whipper snipper against, so you are not stripping the protective treatment off timber palings every mow
- Closes the privacy gap and squares up an untidy fence line on sloping ground
- Gives you a clean, finished edge along garden beds and lawn
The last point matters more than it sounds. Get the plinth fence combination right and the fence looks intentional rather than like it was dropped onto uneven ground.
Plinth materials compared

There are four common options in Australia. Each has a job it does best.
Composite plinths
Composite is the practical pick for most residential fence lines. It will not rot, rust or feed termites, it holds a clean finish with no painting or sealing, and it is light enough for two people to handle without a machine.

Concrete fence plinths
A concrete fence plinth is the heaviest and most rigid option. Steel-reinforced concrete does not decay, does not burn and shrugs off ground moisture indefinitely.
The trade-off is weight and handling. Concrete plinths are a two-person lift, they crack if you drop them, and cutting one on site needs a diamond blade rather than a wood blade. On a long straight run with good access, concrete is a solid choice. On a tight side boundary with steps and a sloping fall, composite is usually the easier day.
Timber plinth boards
A plinth board fence in treated pine or hardwood looks right at home beside timber palings and costs the least upfront. It is also the option with a use-by date. Timber in ground contact in a Queensland climate has a working life measured in years rather than decades, and the plinth is the part of the fence taking the most moisture, which is exactly why it eventually needs replacing.
If you like the timber look and accept the maintenance, use H4 treated stock and expect to revisit it.
Steel and aluminium plinths
Colour-matched steel or aluminium plinths clip in under steel fence panels and give the tidiest visual match. They are light and quick to fit. They hold almost no soil, though, so treat them as a gap filler rather than an edge that retains anything.

What size are under fence plinths?
Most Australian plinths are made to fit standard fence bay spacing, so the length lands around 2340mm to 2400mm. Heights commonly run from 100mm to 200mm per board, with thicknesses around 50mm.
Two rules of thumb worth holding onto:
- Match the plinth length to your fence bay spacing before you order, not after. A run measured in bays orders cleanly. A run measured in metres almost always leaves you short or with an awkward offcut.
- Order the height for the soil step you actually have, plus a little. It is easier to bury 30mm of plinth than to find a second course later.

How high can you stack under fence plinths?
Most concrete under fence plinths on the market are engineered to a maximum of two courses, roughly 400mm, and manufacturers are clear that they are not designed for retaining. Composite plinths are stackable for garden edging and small non-structural applications, again within the manufacturer’s stated limits.
If your soil step is deeper than a couple of courses, or if anything is loading the ground behind the fence such as a driveway, a paved area or a slope above the wall, you are past what a plinth is for. That job needs sleepers, posts and drainage.
How much does an under fence plinth cost?
Materials are the easy part. Composite plinths sit at around $40 each ex GST, which works out to roughly $17 per linear metre for a standard 2380mm board. Treated timber plinths cost less upfront. Concrete generally lands higher again once you factor in freight and handling.
If a fencing contractor is fitting them as part of a new fence, expect plinths to be quoted as an extra per bay on top of the fence price. Industry pricing guides put that addition in the order of $42 to $84 per bay depending on material and site conditions, so a 20 metre boundary of roughly eight bays might add several hundred dollars to a fencing quote.
For a DIY job, the real costs beyond the plinths themselves are small: bedding sand or crushed rock, a bag or two of rapid-set concrete if you are packing posts, and drainage aggregate behind the plinth.

How to install an under fence plinth

This is a straightforward job for a competent DIYer on a new fence, and a fiddlier one on an existing fence. Two people make it much easier either way.
What you will need: plinths, a shovel, a string line, a spirit level, a rubber mallet, bedding sand or crushed rock, drainage aggregate, packers, and a saw with the right blade for your material.
1. Set your line and level.
Run a string line along the fence between posts and mark where the top of the plinth needs to sit. On a sloping run, step the plinth down between bays rather than trying to follow the ground.
2. Dig and bed the trench.
Excavate a shallow trench along the fence line and lay 20mm to 50mm of compacted bedding sand or crushed rock. A level, compacted bed is what stops the plinth rocking later.
3. Slide the plinth in.
Slot one end into the post channel first, then walk the other end in. Sit it on packers or a screed of mortar and tap it level with a rubber mallet.
4. Check level and alignment.
Confirm against your string line before you backfill. Adjustments now take seconds. Later they take an hour.
5. Fix the fence above.
On a new fence, the bottom rail or panel goes on after the plinth is set. On steel systems, that is usually a matter of dropping the panel in above the plinth and securing the bottom rail.
6. Backfill with drainage in mind.
Backfill behind the plinth with crushed rock or blue metal rather than straight soil, so water drains through instead of pooling against the boards.

Tip: cut a plinth to length before you slide it in, not after. Measuring the bay opening at the base rather than the top catches out-of-plumb posts before they cost you a board.
Retrofitting to an existing fence: you can add plinths to a fence that is already up. Dig out along the base, work out whether the bottom rail needs to come off, then slide the plinths in between the existing posts. On steel fences the bottom rail usually unscrews and refits above the plinth. On timber palings you may need to trim the bottom of the palings so they sit clear of the new plinth.
When a plinth is not enough
A plinth handles a shallow, cosmetic level difference. It does not handle structural load.
If any of the following apply, you are building a retaining wall and not fitting a plinth:
- The soil step is more than a couple of plinth courses high
- There is a surcharge load behind the wall, such as a driveway, a shed slab or a paved area
- The wall is doing structural work to hold up a cut or fill batter
- The ground is moving, or an existing wall is leaning or cracking
In Queensland, retaining walls over one metre generally need building approval. Brisbane City Council also notes that a wall can require approval below that height if there is surcharge loading over the zone of influence, or if the wall sits closer than 1.5 metres to a building or another retaining wall. Building work valued over $3,300 must be carried out by a QBCC-licensed contractor. One more thing worth knowing before you start: on a shared boundary, dividing fences in Queensland are usually a 50/50 cost between neighbours where the fence is sufficient for both properties, and the Queensland Government recommends giving your neighbour written notice with the estimated cost before work starts.
