Toowoomba retaining wall materials, delivered over the range

Toowoomba is about 132 km west of Brisbane and sits on the crest of the Great Dividing Range at around 700 metres above sea level, so it is the longest regular run we do and the only one where the load climbs a range to get there.

Delivery from Rocklea to Toowoomba
Depending on the order size we can usually deliver within 2 to 3 business days after order confirmation. We run crane trucks in a range of sizes and match the truck to the load and the access at your site. Delivery cost depends on load size, distance and site access, and the final cost is confirmed before dispatch rather than after you have paid. Toowoomba is the furthest of our regular destinations, so distance carries more weight in that calculation than it does closer to Brisbane. Because the run is long, the cost of a failed delivery is higher here than anywhere else we go. It is worth spending five minutes on the site access checklist before you order: driveway width and surface, gates and tight corners, overhead powerlines, soft or wet ground, where exactly the load goes, and whether a crane truck can reach it from where it can legally park. Two or three phone photos of the frontage and the drop point tell us more than a paragraph.
Council approval in Toowoomba

We hold verified, published approval thresholds for Brisbane City Council, City of Gold Coast, City of Moreton Bay, Logan City Council, Ipswich City Council and Sunshine Coast Council. What we can point you to is the state level position that sits behind the council rules in Queensland. The Queensland Development Code NMP 1.7 sets acceptable solutions including:
- no approval for retaining walls if there is no surcharge loading, and the height of the wall or the height of the fill or excavation is not more than 1 m
- the toe of the fill or the top of the excavation is not less than 1.5 m from a side or rear allotment boundary
- excavation and fill limited to 2 m from natural ground level
- a minimum 600 mm cover around utility infrastructure

Building on the range
Toowoomba sits on the crest of the Great Dividing Range, with the majority of the city west of the divide and a few streets on the eastern edge of the range. That is worth knowing for one practical reason: a job on the escarpment side is a different site to a job out on the flat, in slope, in access and in what the wall has to do.
We are not going to characterise Toowoomba soils, because we have not verified a source we would stand behind and a wrong soil assumption is expensive. Get a site classification and, on anything above the exempt height, an engineer's design. What we will say is that a retaining wall on a slope depends on getting water away from behind it, and the discharge point on a sloping site needs to be planned at the start rather than found at the end. What to buy for a Toowoomba wall
Freight distance changes the arithmetic a little out here. It is usually worth ordering the whole wall in one delivery rather than discovering you are twelve wedges and a roll of geo fabric short, so run the take off before you order.
