Gold Coast retaining wall materials, delivered from Brisbane
HYBUILT supplies retaining wall materials to the Gold Coast from our yard at 28 Shettleston Street, Rocklea QLD 4106. The Gold Coast sits roughly 66 km south south east of Brisbane and the run is a straight one down the Pacific Motorway, so it is one of the more predictable freight legs we do.
We supply concrete, composite, timber and sandstone sleepers, galvanised steel posts in the standard and heavy duty 150 series ranges, corner posts, caps, brackets, wedges, drainage gravel, agi pipe, geo fabric and cement.
Delivery from Rocklea to the Gold Coast
Depending on the order size we can usually deliver within 2 to 3 business days after order confirmation. We run crane trucks in a range of sizes and match the truck to the load and to the access at your site. Delivery cost depends on load size, distance and site access, and the final figure is confirmed before dispatch rather than after you have paid.
Two Gold Coast specific things are worth flagging before you order.
- Bulk drainage gravel is delivery only. Our 10mm and 20mm drainage gravel has no pickup option, and the freight to the Gold Coast is worked out from the volume and the delivery suburb. Ask us to price it with the rest of the order.
- Canal and beachfront access is its own problem. Over 890 km of the Gold Coast's residential waterfront is constructed canal frontage, and the developed coastal strip sits on a narrow barrier sandbar between the waterways and the sea. Narrow streets, tight crossovers, soft sand or fill, and a drop point on the water side of the house all change which truck we send and where the crane can reach from. Council approval on the Gold Coast
The City of Gold Coast publishes a longer list of conditions than most South East Queensland councils. A wall needs building approval unless it is all of the following:
- less than 1.0 metre high
- further than 1.5 metres to a building or another retaining wall
- only supporting the soil behind the wall, nothing above
- not part of a pool fencing
- the combined wall and fence height are less than 2.0 metres
- not built over a service, being sewer or stormwater
- not in an easement or covenant area
- not in a waterfront or oceanfront setback area
Three of those catch people out on the Gold Coast in particular. The waterfront and oceanfront setback condition has no equivalent in the Brisbane or Ipswich lists, and on a canal or beachfront block it can apply to a wall that is well under a metre. The service condition matters because a wall over a sewer or stormwater line is a problem regardless of height. And the combined wall and fence height condition means that adding a fence on top of a low wall can put the whole thing into approval territory, which is a decision usually made after the wall is designed rather than before.
One honest caveat on that last point: the council page states the 2.0 metre combined limit but does not explain how the combined height is measured or from what datum, so confirm how it applies to your wall rather than assuming. More generally, thresholds and council pages change, and nothing here is a substitute for confirming your own situation with the City of Gold Coast or a licensed private building certifier before you order material. If your job is south of the border
Coolangatta is a twin city with Tweed Heads, which sits directly across the New South Wales border. If your site is on the New South Wales side, none of the Queensland thresholds above apply to it, because it is a different planning jurisdiction with its own rules. What to buy for a Gold Coast wall
The material choice on the Gold Coast is usually driven by the same things as anywhere else, height and appearance, plus the fact that a lot of Gold Coast walls are visible from the water or the street.
- Concrete sleepers in five finishes, including block face, timber look and slate stone where the wall face is on show, in 1480mm, 1980mm and 2380mm lengths.
- Galvanised steel posts in twelve lengths from 0.4m to 3.8m, plus corner posts at 90 and 45 degrees for stepped and angled walls. Our steel post selection guide explains which section and length to order.
- Composite sleepers for lower walls where weight and handling matter.
- Sandstone blocks, boulders and steps for feature and garden walls.
- Drainage and geo fabric. Drainage is not optional on a Gold Coast wall any more than anywhere else, and our drainage guide covers sizing and quantities.
- Fence post brackets, including Colorbond brackets, if a fence is going on top. Note the combined height condition above before you commit to that.
