Sandstone retaining wall cost in South East Queensland typically runs [$350–600] per square metre installed in 2026, or [$190–450] per square metre for the blocks alone, depending on grade. Four things account for most of the difference between two walls: block grade, wall height, site access and drainage. Below we break down each one, show the maths on a real wall and compare sandstone with concrete sleepers.

How to Calculate Sandstone Block Costs per Square Metre
Suppliers sell sandstone by the block. Installers quote by the square metre. Converting one to the other takes about a minute.
Sandstone Blocks per Square Metre by Block Size
Our sandstone blocks are 1,000mm long, so each block covers its face height by 1 metre of wall.
-
400mm blocks: 0.4 m² of face each, so 2.5 blocks per m²
-
500mm blocks: 0.5 m² each, so 2 blocks per m²
-
600mm blocks: 0.6 m² each, so about 1.7 blocks per m²
Multiply the block price by the blocks per m² and you have your supply-only rate. Larger blocks mean fewer lifts but need a bigger machine to place.
Worked Example: 10m Sandstone Retaining Wall Cost
Take a wall 10 metres long and 1 metre high, built from 500mm B Premium blocks:
-
Face area: 10 m²
-
Blocks needed: 2 courses of 10 blocks = 20 blocks
-
Block supply: 20 × [$120] = [$2,400 + GST]
-
Delivery: [confirm: included or from $600 + GST per load]
-
Installed estimate: 10 m² × [$350–500] = [$3,500–5,000]
Allow extra blocks if your installer partly buries the first course or the design calls for a second block depth at the base.

What Affects Sandstone Retaining Wall Cost
Sandstone Block Grade: A-Grade vs B Premium vs B Grade
The more sawn faces a block has, the more it costs and the faster it lays.
-
A-Grade (5 or 6 sawn sides). Square faces and tight joints. The highest price per block, but installers spend less time adjusting each one.
-
B Premium (2 sawn sides and 2 sawn ends). Stacks consistently, with more natural texture on the face.
-
B Grade (2–3 sawn sides). The lowest price per block. Sizes vary more, so laying takes longer.
A cheaper block can cost more to lay once labour hours are counted, so price the wall rather than the block. We send photos of the actual stock before you order so there are no surprises on delivery day.
Wall Height, Block Depth and Engineering Costs
Height adds courses, and past a point it adds paperwork. According to Brisbane City Council, a Queensland retaining wall generally needs building approval if it:
-
Retains more than 1 metre above natural ground
-
Sits within 1.5 metres of a building or another retaining wall
-
Carries a surcharge load such as a driveway or structure
Any of these means an RPEQ engineer's design and approval fees on top of the build.
Taller gravity walls also need a deeper base, often blocks laid two deep on the lower courses. That doubles the block count for those courses.
Licensing matters too. The QBCC requires a licence for building work valued over $3,300, which covers most installed sandstone walls.
Site Access, Excavator Size and Delivery
Full-size sandstone blocks weigh hundreds of kilograms each [confirm weights], so an excavator places them.
-
Tight side access means a smaller machine, slower placement and more labour hours.
-
Steep sites add excavation, spoil removal and tip fees.
-
Crane truck delivery lifts blocks over fences and onto site. HYBUILT runs a fleet of crane trucks in different sizes to suit load size and access.
Drainage Rock, Ag Pipe and Footing Costs
Every sandstone wall quote should list:
-
20mm drainage aggregate behind the wall
-
Slotted ag pipe with a filter sock, connected to a legal discharge point
-
Geotextile fabric against the native soil
-
A compacted crushed rock base, or a concrete footing on engineered walls
-
Spoil removal

How to Keep Sandstone Retaining Wall Costs Down
-
Order full truckloads. Delivery is priced per load [confirm], so one full truck beats two part loads.
-
Match the grade to the wall. Use B Grade behind garden beds or out of sight, and A-Grade where the wall is a feature.
-
Plan tiers carefully. Tiered walls under 1 metre can avoid engineering costs, but only if they sit at least 1.5 metres apart.
-
Pay for drainage once. Rebuilding a failed wall costs far more than doing the drainage properly the first time.

Sandstone Retaining Wall Cost FAQs
How much does a sandstone retaining wall cost per m2?
In South East Queensland, expect [$350–600] per m² installed and [$190–450] per m² for blocks alone (ex GST), depending on block grade.
How much would a 10m sandstone retaining wall cost?
A 10-metre wall 1 metre high typically costs [$3,500–6,000] installed. The blocks alone run around [$1,900–4,500 + GST] depending on grade.
What is the cheapest retaining wall to build?
Treated pine sleepers usually cost least upfront but have the shortest lifespan. Among long-life options, concrete sleepers generally cost less per m² than sandstone once installed.
Is a sandstone retaining wall worth the cost?
For low to mid-height walls where looks matter and there's room for a proper base, yes. Sandstone needs no posts and lasts for decades when built with good drainage.
Do sandstone block prices include GST and delivery?
HYBUILT prices are ex GST. Delivery is quoted separately based on load size and your area [confirm].
Does HYBUILT install sandstone retaining walls?
HYBUILT supplies the materials. For installation, use a QBCC-licensed contractor. Our team can point you to installers who regularly work with our blocks [confirm wording].
